About

Professional Summary

I changed the game. Not figuratively — literally. Every team in the league restructured their roster, their offense, their draft strategy, and their practice schedule because of what I do from 30 feet away. I was told I was too small, too weak, couldn't play in college, couldn't play in the pros, had bad ankles, and would never be more than a spot-up shooter. I responded by becoming the greatest shooter in the history of basketball, winning 4 championships, 2 MVPs, a Finals MVP, and breaking every three-point record that exists. I shoot shots that shouldn't go in, from distances that shouldn't work, with release times that shouldn't be possible. And they go in. Every time anyone in the NBA launches a three, that's my resume. Available for consulting, disruption, and making gravity look optional.

Professional Experience

Career History

From mid-major underdog to the man who broke basketball. A disruption story.

Director of Innovation & Long-Range Strategy

Golden State Warriors

2009 - Present

San Francisco, CA (formerly Oakland, CA)

  • Transformed a struggling franchise into a $7B dynasty through a skill competitors said was unsustainable
  • Led the team to 4 championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) and a 73-9 regular season record
  • Achieved the only unanimous MVP award in league history (2015-16)
  • Posted a 50-45-90 shooting season while making 402 three-pointers — a record that broke the previous record by 116
  • Broke Ray Allen's all-time three-point record (2,973) on December 14, 2021 — then kept going
  • Career stats: 42% from three on the highest volume and difficulty of shots in league history
  • Forced every competing organization to completely restructure their talent acquisition strategy
  • Made the corner office irrelevant — operates most effectively from 30 feet away

Brand Architect & Market Disruptor

Curry Brand / Under Armour

2013 - Present

Global

  • Turned down Nike — the industry monopoly — to bet on an underdog (Under Armour). Sound familiar?
  • Built Curry Brand into a standalone sub-brand generating $150M+ annually
  • Proved that a player without a single dunk highlight could outsell players who had them
  • Launched signature shoe line now in its 12th iteration, outselling most competitors
  • Strategy: be so good they restructure the market around you, then sell them the shoes to do it in

Student-Athlete & Draft Day Underdog

Davidson College

2006 - 2009

Davidson, NC

  • Rejected by every major college program — Virginia Tech wouldn't offer a scholarship
  • Led a mid-major school to the Elite Eight as a sophomore, dropping 40 on Georgetown, 33 on Wisconsin
  • Averaged 25.3 PPG in college — highest in the nation as a junior
  • Drafted 7th overall by the Warriors, behind Hasheem Thabeet (#2) and Jonny Flynn (#6)
  • Every team that passed on him has been answering for it ever since

Ankle Rehab Patient / Comeback Specialist

Various Medical Facilities

2011 - 2013

San Francisco, CA

  • Suffered multiple ankle injuries that nearly ended his career before it started
  • The Warriors signed him to a 4-year, $44M extension — considered an overpay for damaged goods
  • That $44M contract became the greatest bargain in professional sports history
  • Used the doubt as fuel for a stretch of play that redefined the sport permanently
  • Current status: the ankles are fine. The league is not.

Interview Transcript

The Conversation

Conducted at Chase Center. He was shooting during the entire interview. Made 17 in a row.

Q: Mr. Curry, thank you for coming in. Tell us about yourself.

Steph: I'm Steph. I shoot threes. They go in. I've been doing it for 15 years and the defense still hasn't figured out a counter. That's my value proposition.

Q: You were passed over by 6 teams on draft night. How did that shape you?

Steph: Two teams drafted point guards ahead of me. Both of those point guards are out of the league. I have four rings. The market corrected itself. It just took a few years.

Q: Critics say you changed the game in a negative way — too many threes, no more post play.

Steph: I didn't tell anyone to start shooting threes. I just showed what happens when you make them at a 45% clip from 30 feet. Every team decided on their own to restructure. That's not my problem. That's market disruption. If you invent the iPhone, you don't apologize for killing the Blackberry.

Q: What's the most difficult shot you've ever made?

Steph: I don't think about shots in terms of difficulty. Difficulty is a function of how open you are and how much time you have. I'm never open and I never have time. So they're all difficult. They just don't look like it.

Q: How do you handle pressure in big moments?

Steph: I shimmy. Seriously — I hit a big shot and I shimmy. It drives people insane. The shimmy isn't disrespect. It's joy. I play basketball because it's fun. It's always been fun. The day it stops being fun, I'll stop. But it hasn't stopped being fun, so I haven't stopped shimmying.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Steph: Shooting threes from further away. They keep moving the line back in the record books and I keep passing it. At some point they'll put a four-point line on the court and I'll have a head start on everyone by about a decade. That's called strategic positioning.

Q: Any weaknesses?

Steph: I can't dunk. I mean, technically I can. But nobody's putting it on a poster. It's fine. Nobody's putting a poster dunk on a championship banner either. Well — some people are. But I have four banners and zero posters and I'm comfortable with that ratio.

What Others Say

"I played with Michael Jordan. I coached Steph Curry. They are different kinds of greatness, but the impact is the same — everyone in the building knows something impossible is about to happen, and there's nothing you can do about it. Michael did it through force. Steph does it through joy. He makes the hardest thing in basketball look like recess. He runs around screens for 40 minutes, gets a half-inch of daylight, and launches a shot from 32 feet with a 0.4-second release. And you know what? It goes in. It always goes in. He changed the way every team in the world plays basketball. That's not an opinion. That's a fact you can see in every roster, every playbook, every draft board since 2015."

Steve Kerr

Head Coach, Golden State Warriors / 5x NBA Champion / Former Teammate of MJ

"People ask me what it's like to play with Steph. It's like being the second-best shooter on the planet and having everyone still look at the other guy. Which is fine. Because the other guy is from another planet. I've seen him make shots that made me — a professional shooter — stop and stare. In practice. In a game, he hit a shot from the tunnel once. Not the logo. The tunnel. I shoot with him every day and I still don't fully understand how he does it. The release is faster than my brain can process. He sees windows that don't exist yet. Best teammate I ever had. Don't tell Draymond."

Klay Thompson

Shooting Guard / Splash Brother / 4x NBA Champion

"I coached Stephen Curry before the world knew what he was. I knew. We all knew. The kid could do things with a basketball that nobody had ever done. I told people: this man is going to change the game. They nodded politely. Then Steve Kerr took over, the system unlocked him, and the rest is history. Mama, there goes that man. Hand down, man down. That's my guy."

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Steph Curry the greatest shooter ever?

Steph Curry holds the all-time record for three-pointers made (3,700+), shoots 42% from three for his career on the highest difficulty and volume of attempts in history, and achieved a 50-45-90 season while making 402 threes in 2015-16. He also has a 0.4-second release, making his shot virtually unblockable.

How many championships has Steph Curry won?

Steph Curry has won 4 NBA Championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) with the Golden State Warriors, along with 2 regular season MVPs (including the only unanimous MVP in history) and a Finals MVP in 2022.

Why was Steph Curry drafted 7th?

Despite being the leading scorer in college basketball, Curry was considered too small (6'2", 185 lbs), too weak for the NBA, and limited to a 'shooter' label. Six teams passed on him, including two who drafted point guards ahead of him. Both of those players are out of the league.

"I don't think about shots in terms of difficulty. They're all difficult. They just don't look like it."
