Keanu's father, Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., left the family when Keanu was three years old. He grew up in Toronto with his mother Patricia, moving frequently. The absence shaped him. River Phoenix, Keanu's close friend and co-star in My Own Private Idaho, died of a drug overdose outside The Viper Room on October 31, 1993. He was 23. Keanu was devastated. He has spoken about River's death with quiet reverence for decades. The two had formed a deep creative and personal bond during Idaho, and Keanu has maintained a relationship with the Phoenix family ever since.

Keanu's daughter with Jennifer Syme, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves, was stillborn on January 9, 1999 at eight months. The loss was shattering. Keanu and Jennifer had been together for several years. Jennifer Syme, Keanu's former girlfriend and the mother of Ava, died in a car accident on April 2, 2001. She was 28.
