Support Theodore — A Miami Beach Baby Fighting the Rarest Tumor in Pediatric Medicine

I don't usually write posts like this, but some situations are too important not to share.

A baby named Theodore — the son of a close friend of mine here in Miami Beach — was diagnosed at just two months old with a Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy (MNTI). Fewer than 500 cases of this tumor have ever been documented in the medical literature. Most pediatric specialists will go their entire careers without seeing a single case.

What Happened

The tumor destroyed part of Theodore's upper jaw and cranial bone. It began threatening his ability to breathe and eat. His surgical team — several of whom, with decades of experience, had never personally treated a case this severe — had to perform radical excision to save his life.

Theodore's case is now formally studied in the medical literature because of its rarity and severity.

The pathology reports raise concerns about remaining margins, which may require additional procedures. Craniofacial specialists have said the damage will likely require long-term reconstruction and monitoring throughout childhood and into adolescence — bone grafting, jaw support, and dental rehabilitation as he grows.

The Family's Situation

Theodore's father is doing this alone. The mother left with the baby and then the family had to fight to be part of Theodore's medical journey. Despite everything, his dad has shown up every single day — advocating for his son, coordinating with doctors, and trying to hold it all together.

Because MNTI is so rare, much of Theodore's specialized care is out-of-network. Insurance complications mean a significant portion of the costs fall on the family. The financial burden is immense — on top of everything else.

How You Can Help

A Personal Note

I know Theodore's dad. He's a good man and a good father going through something no parent should ever face. I'm sharing this because I've seen my community show up when it matters. If you can give — give. If you can share — share. Either one makes a real difference.
