Why It Ranks
The show that proved video game adaptations could be art.

The Review
The Last of Us shattered the video game adaptation curse. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann translated the beloved PlayStation game into a post-apocalyptic drama that stands alongside the best of prestige television regardless of its source material. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie created one of the great screen partnerships — a surrogate father-daughter relationship forged in a world where love is the most dangerous thing you can feel. Episode 3, 'Long Long Time,' featuring Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett's love story, is a standalone masterpiece that was acclaimed as one of the best individual episodes of any show that year. The series proved that faithfulness to source material and artistic ambition are not mutually exclusive.
Fun Fact
The infected actors wore practical prosthetics and makeup rather than CGI, and the makeup team grew actual fungal cultures to study how the cordyceps growth would realistically spread across a human body.
