Rick and Morty is the most conceptually ambitious animated comedy since Futurama. Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland built a show about the smartest being in the multiverse and his anxious grandson that uses science fiction as a delivery system for philosophy, family drama, and some of the most inventive storytelling on television. 'The Ricklantis Mixup,' 'The Vat of Acid Episode,' and 'Total Rickall' are masterclasses in structure and surprise. The show's central question — does intelligence breed misery, and does meaning exist in an infinite multiverse? — gives it an emotional weight that its absurdist surface disguises. At its best, Rick and Morty is both the funniest and most existentially devastating show on television.
