Why It Ranks
The smartest show disguised as the silliest show.
Score Breakdown
The Review
Futurama is the most intellectually ambitious animated comedy ever produced. Matt Groening's second series assembled a writers' room with multiple PhDs in mathematics, physics, and computer science, and they used that brainpower to create a show that could make you laugh at a robot's drinking problem and cry at a dog waiting outside a pizza shop in the same half hour. 'Jurassic Bark,' 'The Luck of the Fryish,' and 'The Late Philip J. Fry' are among the most emotionally devastating episodes in comedy history. The show invented a new mathematical theorem for a body-switching episode. Futurama proves that genuine intelligence and genuine silliness are not opposites — they are complements.
Fun Fact
Writer Ken Keeler invented an entirely new mathematical theorem — the Futurama theorem, later published in an academic journal — specifically to resolve the plot of the body-switching episode.
