The Review

House of the Dragon proved that the Game of Thrones universe still had stories worth telling. Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik's prequel about the Targaryen civil war — the Dance of the Dragons — delivered everything fans loved about the original series: political intrigue, moral complexity, breathtaking dragon sequences, and characters who make terrible decisions for understandable reasons. Paddy Considine's Viserys I is a tragically sympathetic king whose desire to hold his family together inadvertently destroys it. Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke as the adult Rhaenyra and Alicent carry the show with performances that make a centuries-old succession crisis feel painfully personal.

Fun Fact

Paddy Considine was so committed to portraying King Viserys's deterioration that he researched real medieval diseases and wore increasingly uncomfortable prosthetics that took eight hours to apply.
