Why It Ranks
Star Wars for people who gave up on Star Wars.
Score Breakdown
The Review
Andor is the most mature, politically sophisticated Star Wars story ever told. Tony Gilroy created a spy thriller that examines how ordinary people become revolutionaries — and the moral compromises that rebellion demands. Diego Luna's Cassian Andor is a cynical, self-interested survivor who is slowly radicalized by the Empire's casual cruelty. Stellan Skarsgard's Luthen Rael delivers a monologue about sacrifice that is the single best piece of dialogue in the franchise's history. The three-episode Narkina 5 prison arc is a stunning meditation on systemic oppression. Andor proves that Star Wars can be genuinely adult storytelling without lightsabers or Force powers.
Fun Fact
Tony Gilroy initially turned down the project twice before agreeing to showrun, and he has been open about not being a Star Wars fan — which may be exactly why the show feels so fresh.
