Iconic Quote
“Some of you may die, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make.”
— Lord Farquaad, Shrek
What Makes Them Great
Farquaad is the villain who satirizes every compensating dictator in history — a tiny man with a massive castle and an ego to match. Lithgow's delivery makes every line a punchline, and Farquaad's fate inside the dragon is one of animation's funniest villain defeats.
The Villain
Lord Farquaad is DreamWorks' most perfectly satirical villain — a diminutive tyrant who compensates for his short stature by building an absurdly tall castle and evicting every fairy-tale creature from his kingdom. John Lithgow's performance captures the character's Napoleon complex with acidic precision. Farquaad's interrogation of the Gingerbread Man and his obsession with Fiona are hilarious takedowns of autocratic vanity.
