Why It Ranks

Hard Boiled is the greatest gun-action film ever made. John Woo’s dual-wielding, slow-motion, dove-filled aesthetic became the template for a generation of action filmmakers. The hospital siege’s unbroken long take is one of the most technically impressive action sequences ever shot. It is the film that invented gun-fu.

The Film

Hard Boiled is the apex of Hong Kong action cinema and the film that brought John Woo to Hollywood’s attention. Chow Yun-fat plays Inspector ‘Tequila’ Yuen, a jazz-loving cop investigating arms dealers, and what follows is the most spectacularly choreographed gunplay ever committed to film.

The opening teahouse shootout is the mission statement: doves flying in slow motion, shell casings cascading like rain, Chow Yun-fat sliding down a banister with two guns blazing. Woo’s ‘heroic bloodshed’ style treats gunfights as ballet, and the result is action that is simultaneously beautiful and devastating.

The hospital siege in the final act is the crown jewel. A continuous 2-minute 42-second Steadicam shot follows Tequila through multiple floors of a hospital under assault, engaging enemies in real-time without a single visible cut. It was the most technically ambitious action sequence ever attempted at the time, and it remains one of the greatest long takes in cinema history.

Fun Facts

The hospital set was rigged to be systematically destroyed during filming — every squib, every explosion was timed to the choreography.

Hard Boiled was John Woo’s final Hong Kong film before moving to Hollywood to direct Broken Arrow and Face/Off.

Chow Yun-fat actually carried a real baby during portions of the hospital sequence.

The film’s body count of approximately 307 makes it one of the most violent action films ever produced.
