Why It Ranks
Edge of Tomorrow is the smartest action film of the 2010s. The time-loop structure is both hilarious and genuinely moving, Emily Blunt is a revelation as the Full Metal Bitch, and Doug Liman extracts maximum entertainment from a concept that could have been gimmicky. Criminally underseen in theaters, rightfully beloved now.
The Film
Edge of Tomorrow is Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers, and it works far better than that pitch suggests. Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, a cowardly public affairs officer who is thrown into a D-Day-style beach assault against alien invaders and discovers he is trapped in a time loop. Every death resets the day, and Cage gradually transforms from a terrified bureaucrat into a hardened warrior.
Emily Blunt’s Rita Vrataski — the ‘Full Metal Bitch’ — is one of the great female action characters. She is tougher, more skilled, and more experienced than the male lead, and the film never undercuts her competence. Blunt’s performance is ferocious and funny, and her dynamic with Cruise drives the entire film.
Doug Liman’s direction turns the time-loop structure into a source of both comedy and genuine emotion. The repeated deaths are initially played for laughs, but as Cage falls for Rita, each reset carries more weight. Edge of Tomorrow was criminally underseen on release but has rightfully become a cult classic.
Fun Facts
The film was based on the Japanese light novel ‘All You Need Is Kill’ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.
Emily Blunt trained for three months with a Navy SEAL to prepare for the role.
The exosuits weighed 85 pounds each. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt wore them in every action scene.
The film was rebranded to ‘Live. Die. Repeat.’ for home video because the studio felt the original title was too confusing.
