Flamingo Park

Flamingo Park is the reason Miami Beach is livable and not just visitable. 36 acres of tennis courts, a pool, a dog park, a running track, baseball, basketball — right in the middle of everything. This is where locals actually spend their time.

Why Flamingo Park Matters

When people think of Miami Beach, they think of South Beach, clubs, and models. That's the tourist version. The real Miami Beach — the one where people actually live and raise families — revolves around Flamingo Park.

I use the pool, I run on the track, I've played tennis here. It's not fancy. The facilities are municipal, not resort-grade. But they work, they're maintained, and they're right in the middle of a dense urban island where green space is precious.

If you're thinking about moving to Miami Beach, how close you are to Flamingo Park should be a real factor in where you look. It's the closest thing this island has to a neighborhood center.

Facilities

Tennis Center

19 clay courts — one of the largest public tennis facilities in Florida. Courts are well-maintained and available for daily play or league matches. There's a pro shop and lessons available.

Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst heat. Evening sessions under the lights are the move in summer.

Aquatic Center

Olympic-sized pool plus a smaller training pool. Lap swimming, water aerobics, swim lessons, and open swim. The pool is heated in winter and is one of the best public pools in South Florida.

Tip: Lap swim is available during specific hours. Check the schedule — it changes seasonally. The masters swim program is solid.

Dog Park

Fenced off-leash area with separate sections for large and small dogs. Shaded benches, water stations, and a double-gate entry. This is where half of Miami Beach's dog owners congregate.

Tip: Peak hours are 5-7pm weekdays and all morning on weekends. The small dog section is less chaotic if your dog is social but not fearless.

Running Track

Rubberized track surrounding the football/soccer field. Standard oval, well-lit, and flat. Popular with joggers, walkers, and people doing sprint intervals.

Tip: The track gets busy around 6-7am and 5-7pm. If you want it empty, go at lunch (yes, it's hot — but it's Miami).

Baseball Diamond

Full-sized baseball diamond with bleachers. Used for local league games and pick-up softball. The field is also used for soccer when baseball isn't in season.

Tip: Check the city schedule for league game times. It's a surprisingly good spectator experience with the Miami Beach skyline as backdrop.

Basketball Courts

Multiple outdoor basketball courts, fully lit for evening play. Pickup games happen regularly and the competition level is decent.

Tip: Weekend mornings have the most organized runs. Bring water — there's limited shade courtside.

Playground

Modern playground equipment for multiple age groups. Shaded areas, rubber surfacing, and a splash pad for little kids. One of the better playgrounds in Miami Beach.

Tip: The splash pad is open seasonally. Mornings are less crowded and cooler for young kids.

Fitness Stations

Outdoor fitness equipment scattered around the park perimeter. Pull-up bars, dip stations, sit-up benches, and more. Free to use, no membership required.

Tip: Pair these with laps on the track for a free full-body workout. Better than most hotel gyms.

When to Go

6:00 - 8:00 AM

Joggers, dog walkers, and early tennis players. The best time if you want peace.

8:00 - 11:00 AM

Families and weekend league games. Playground gets active. Pool opens for lap swim.

11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Dead zone. It's too hot for most people. The pool is your friend.

5:00 - 7:00 PM

Peak hour. Dog park is packed, track is busy, pickup basketball is live. The golden hour light is incredible.

7:00 - 10:00 PM

Night tennis under the lights. Track walkers. The most pleasant temperature of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Flamingo Park free to use?

The park itself is free — walking, running track, playgrounds, basketball courts, and fitness stations are all free. Tennis courts, the aquatic center, and organized programs have fees. Miami Beach residents get discounted rates. A daily tennis court fee is around $4-8 for residents.

Q: What are Flamingo Park's hours?

The park is open daily from sunrise to 10pm (some facilities close earlier). The aquatic center and tennis center have their own hours — typically 6am-8pm but check the City of Miami Beach website for current schedules. Hours change seasonally.

Q: Is there parking at Flamingo Park?

There's a parking lot on the south side of the park and street parking around the perimeter. Metered parking applies in most surrounding streets. If you live within walking distance, walk. Parking on weekends during league games can be tight.

Q: Can I bring my dog to Flamingo Park?

Dogs must be leashed in the general park area. The dedicated off-leash dog park has separate sections for large and small dogs, with water stations and shade. The dog park has its own hours (typically 7am-9pm). Bring bags — they enforce cleanup.
