Miami Beach Fitness Guide
I live in Miami Beach and I stay fit without a fancy gym membership. This is the real guide to every fitness option on the island — from free outdoor stations to Olympic pools to beach running routes. No influencer fluff.
My Approach
Miami Beach is one of the best places in the world to stay fit, and most of the best options are free. You have an ocean, a heated Olympic pool, outdoor gym equipment, running paths, and weather that allows year-round outdoor training (with seasonal heat adjustments).
I follow a primal fitness philosophy inspired by Mark Sisson: move frequently at a slow pace, lift heavy things, sprint occasionally, and play. Miami Beach is built for this. The ocean is your cold plunge. The beach is your gym. The boardwalk is your track.
Public Pools
Flamingo Park Aquatic Center
$5-10/day, discounted for residentsOlympic-sized heated pool in the heart of Miami Beach. Lap swimming, masters swim program, water aerobics, and open swim. This is the best public pool on the island.
Tip: Morning lap swim (6-8am) is the least crowded. The masters program is genuinely competitive.
North Shore Park Pool
$5-8/day, discounted for residents25-meter pool in North Beach. Less crowded than Flamingo, solid for daily laps. The surrounding park has a nice playground and walking paths.
Tip: A good alternative when Flamingo is packed. The North Beach area is underrated for fitness.
Ocean Swimming
FreeFree and always open. Swim parallel to shore between lifeguard stations. The ocean provides natural resistance training you can't replicate in a pool. Just watch for currents.
Tip: Swim near a staffed lifeguard stand. Early morning before 9am has the calmest water and fewest swimmers.
Gyms
Equinox South Beach
$200+/monthPremium gym on Collins Avenue. Top-tier equipment, group classes, spa, rooftop pool. The most expensive option but the nicest facility.
Tip: Worth it if you'll actually use the classes and pool. If you just lift weights, there are cheaper options.
Anatomy Fitness
$100-180/monthBoutique gym with excellent group training classes, weight room, and a strong community. Multiple Miami Beach locations.
Tip: Their strength classes are genuinely hard. Good vibe, serious trainers.
Planet Fitness (North Beach)
$10-25/monthBudget gym, no frills. Basic cardio and weight machines. Fine for maintenance workouts or if you just need a treadmill.
Tip: Don't expect squat racks or free weight culture. It's a treadmill-and-machines gym.
Flamingo Park Fitness Stations
FreeFree outdoor pull-up bars, dip stations, and sit-up benches scattered around the park perimeter. Pair with track laps for a complete workout.
Tip: This is my go-to. No membership, no crowds, no air conditioning (feature, not bug).
Running & Cycling
Miami Beach Boardwalk
FreePaved path running from around 24th Street all the way up to 46th Street and beyond. Ocean views the entire way. This is the signature running route in Miami Beach.
Tip: Run at sunrise. The light is incredible, the temperature is bearable, and you'll see the Raven's legacy in action (runners, not birds).
Flamingo Park Track
FreeRubberized oval track, lit at night. Flat and predictable. Good for intervals, tempos, or easy miles.
Tip: Run counter-clockwise. Everyone does. The track is shared with walkers so be aware.
Venetian Causeway
Free (pedestrians/cyclists)The bridge connecting Miami Beach to the mainland. About 2.5 miles each way with stunning bay views. Popular for cycling and running.
Tip: Go at sunset. The views of the Miami skyline are unreal. Watch for cars — there's a bike lane but it's narrow.
South Pointe to Lincoln Road Loop
FreeA roughly 4-mile loop from South Pointe Park up Ocean Drive, across to Lincoln Road, and back down the beach. Hits every landmark.
Tip: Saturday morning before 9am is perfect. You get the whole route with minimal tourists.
Beach Workouts
Sand Running
FreeRunning on sand burns roughly 50% more calories than pavement due to the unstable surface. Soft sand for maximum difficulty, packed sand near the water for moderate resistance.
Tip: Start with 15 minutes on packed sand. Soft sand destroys your calves until you adapt. Go barefoot.
Muscle Beach (Lummus Park)
FreeOutdoor weight area right on the sand. Basic but functional — pull-up bars, dip bars, bench press. The original outdoor gym vibe. It's a tourist attraction but locals use it too.
Tip: Peak showtime is weekends 10am-2pm. If you want to actually work out without an audience, go early on weekdays.
Ocean Resistance Training
FreeWalking, running, or doing exercises waist-deep in the ocean. The water resistance makes every movement harder. Excellent for rehab and low-impact conditioning.
Tip: Great for active recovery days. The saltwater is therapeutic and the ocean doesn't charge a membership.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the best gym in Miami Beach for serious lifting?
For pure weight training, Anatomy Fitness has the best balance of equipment and culture. Equinox has everything but costs twice as much. If you just need basics, Flamingo Park's outdoor stations are free and surprisingly complete for bodyweight training. There's no Gold's Gym equivalent on the island.
Q: Where can I swim laps in Miami Beach?
Flamingo Park Aquatic Center has the best pool — Olympic-sized, heated, with a masters program. North Shore Park Pool is smaller but less crowded. For ocean swimming, the area between lifeguard stations at 3rd-5th Street has calm, protected water most mornings.
Q: What's the best running route in Miami Beach?
The boardwalk at sunrise is the signature route — ocean views, good pavement, and flat. The Venetian Causeway is better for distance (5 miles round trip) with bay views. Flamingo Park track is best for intervals and speed work. The South Pointe to Lincoln Road loop (~4 miles) hits every landmark.
Q: Are there free workout options in Miami Beach?
Yes, many. Flamingo Park has free fitness stations (pull-ups, dips, sit-ups) and a running track. Muscle Beach at Lummus Park has free outdoor weights. The boardwalk and beach are free for running. Ocean swimming is free. You can stay very fit in Miami Beach without spending a dollar on gym membership.
Q: Is it too hot to exercise outdoors in Miami Beach?
June through September, midday outdoor exercise is brutal (90F+ with high humidity). The solution: go early morning (before 9am) or evening (after 6pm). The ocean breeze helps, and winter months (November-March) are genuinely perfect for outdoor training — 70-80F with low humidity.
