Score Breakdown
The Review
True Detective Season 1 is the single greatest season of television ever produced. Nic Pizzolatto wrote a Louisiana noir that is simultaneously a murder mystery, a philosophical treatise on nihilism, and a meditation on time, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves. Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle is the most fully realized character in limited-series history — a man who has looked into the void and come back with a vocabulary for what he saw. Woody Harrelson's Marty Hart is his perfect counterweight. The six-minute tracking shot through the projects is the most technically accomplished sequence in television history. Season 1 is a standalone masterpiece.
Fun Fact
The famous six-minute tracking shot in Episode 4 was actually filmed in one continuous take with no hidden cuts — the crew rehearsed it for days.
