About Sportvision

Sportvision is responsible for what may be the single most important sports broadcast innovation since instant replay: the virtual yellow first-down line in American football. Debuted during a 1998 ESPN broadcast of a Cincinnati Bengals game, the yellow line was initially dismissed by some as a gimmick. Today, it is so integral to the football viewing experience that most fans under 30 cannot imagine watching a game without it.

The technology behind the yellow line is more sophisticated than it appears. The system must know the exact position of every camera, the precise location of the first-down marker, the three-dimensional topography of the field (which is not flat — most fields are crowned for drainage), and it must render the virtual line in real time so that it appears to lie on the grass surface beneath the players. Sportvision solved all of these challenges in the late 1990s with computing power that seems laughably limited by today's standards.

Beyond the first-down line, Sportvision developed the K-Zone pitch-tracking graphic for Major League Baseball broadcasts — the rectangular strike zone overlay that shows exactly where each pitch crosses the plate. They also created virtual car-tracking overlays for NASCAR that helped viewers follow cars during races. Each of these innovations followed the same principle: use technology to make the viewing experience more informative without disrupting it.

Sportvision's legacy extends far beyond its own products. They proved that augmented reality could enhance live sports broadcasts, paving the way for every virtual graphic and overlay that followed. The company was ahead of its time in many ways, and while its corporate structure has evolved (much of their technology was acquired by SMT), their contribution to sports broadcasting is permanent. Every virtual graphic you see on a sports broadcast exists, in some way, because Sportvision proved the concept was not just possible but indispensable.
