Why It Ranks

Never Back Down rode the MMA wave to solid box office success. Hounsou elevates the familiar material. The fight choreography is authentic and exciting. It became a guilty-pleasure classic for combat sports fans.

The Film

Never Back Down is essentially The Karate Kid for the MMA generation — a teenager with anger issues moves to a new school, gets humiliated by a rich bully who is also a fighter, and trains under a wise mentor to compete in an underground MMA tournament. Djimon Hounsou brings gravitas to the mentor role. The MMA sequences are well-choreographed and the film captured the post-UFC zeitgeist perfectly.

Fun Facts

Djimon Hounsou trained in MMA for the role and performed his own fight scenes.

Sean Faris was chosen partly for his physical resemblance to a young Tom Cruise.

The film was shot in Orlando, Florida, using real MMA gyms as locations.

It spawned two direct-to-video sequels featuring Michael Jai White.
