Why It Ranks
Bloodsport defined the martial arts tournament genre. Van Damme's athleticism launched an entire career. Bolo Yeung's Chong Li is iconic. The Kumite concept influenced fighting games and MMA culture for decades.
The Film
Bloodsport is the film that made Jean-Claude Van Damme a star — a martial arts tournament film loosely based on the alleged exploits of Frank Dux in the underground Kumite. The fighting is spectacular, Van Damme's physicality is mesmerizing, and Bolo Yeung's Chong Li is one of the great martial arts villains. It is pure 1980s action cinema with no pretensions beyond being thrilling.
Fun Facts
The film's budget was only $1.5 million — its $65M worldwide gross made it enormously profitable.
Frank Dux claims the Kumite was real; martial arts historians dispute this extensively.
Van Damme performed all his own fight scenes, showcasing his real martial arts training.
The film spawned three sequels, none featuring Van Damme.
