Why It Ranks
Snowpiercer introduced Western audiences to Bong Joon-ho's genius years before Parasite. The train-as-society metaphor is the most effective class allegory in modern sci-fi. Every car is a revelation.
The Film
Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer is a class-war allegory set on a perpetually moving train carrying humanity's last survivors through a frozen apocalypse. The poor live in squalor at the tail, the rich in opulence at the front, and Chris Evans leads a revolution car by car through increasingly surreal environments. Tilda Swinton's Minister Mason is a grotesque comic creation. The film's structure — each car revealing a new layer of the social hierarchy — is brilliant design.
