Why It Ranks
Ready Player One grossed $583M by weaponizing nostalgia — and Spielberg is self-aware enough to make that the point. The racing sequence and The Shining homage are peak Spielberg spectacle. It is the most entertaining VR film ever made.
The Film
Spielberg directing a film about pop culture nostalgia is the most meta casting in cinema history — half the references are to his own filmography. Ready Player One is set in a dystopian 2045 where everyone escapes into the OASIS, a VR world filled with IP from every era. The Shining sequence, where characters enter Kubrick's film, is a staggering technical achievement. The real world is gray; the virtual world is intoxicating. Spielberg knows exactly what that says about us.
Fun Facts
Spielberg removed most references to his own films from the script — he felt it would be too self-congratulatory.
The Shining sequence replaced the WarGames scene from the novel because Spielberg knew Kubrick personally and wanted to honor him.
The film contains over 200 pop culture references across its runtime.
Ernest Cline wrote the novel specifically hoping Spielberg would direct the adaptation.
