Why It Ranks

Dune proved that the 'unfilmable' novel could be filmed with patience, respect, and staggering visual ambition. Villeneuve created a new standard for epic science fiction. The sandworm emergence sequence alone justifies the entire production.

The Film

Denis Villeneuve accomplished what David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and every other filmmaker who attempted Frank Herbert's Dune could not — he made it work. The 2021 adaptation is a monumental achievement in world-building, a film that treats Herbert's dense political and ecological mythology with the seriousness it deserves while delivering visuals so vast and tactile that IMAX screens felt inadequate. Arrakis is not a set. It is a world: the sand moves, the heat shimmers, the worms rumble beneath the surface like tectonic events.

Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides is perfectly cast — a young man burdened by visions of a future he does not want, caught between his mother's Bene Gesserit training and his father's political idealism. Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica is the film's emotional core, a woman torn between loyalty to her order and love for her son. Hans Zimmer's score is a character unto itself, blending Middle Eastern instrumentation with industrial drones into something that sounds like the desert itself breathing.

Fun Facts

Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan's Tenet to score Dune — the only time he has ever chosen another director over Nolan.

The stillsuits were real functional costumes that took months to design and were extremely uncomfortable to wear in the desert heat.

Villeneuve insisted on filming in real deserts — Jordan, Abu Dhabi, and Norway — rather than using soundstages.

The film was simultaneously released in theaters and on HBO Max due to the pandemic, which Villeneuve publicly criticized.
