Arrival is the most philosophically ambitious science fiction film of the 2010s — a first-contact story that is really a meditation on time, language, grief, and the choices we make knowing how they will end. Denis Villeneuve adapts Ted Chiang's 'Story of Your Life' into a film that unfolds like a puzzle box, where the answer to the mystery reframes everything you have seen.

Amy Adams plays Dr. Louise Banks, a linguist recruited by the military to communicate with one of twelve alien vessels that have landed around the world. The aliens — heptapods who communicate in circular ink patterns — force Louise to rethink not just language but the nature of time itself. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis — the idea that language shapes perception — becomes literal: learning the heptapod language gives Louise the ability to perceive time non-linearly.

The twist — that the 'flashbacks' to Louise's daughter are actually flash-forwards, and Louise chooses to have her daughter knowing she will die young — is one of the most emotionally devastating revelations in modern cinema.
