James Cameron took Ridley Scott's haunted-house-in-space horror film and turned it into a war movie — and it works brilliantly. Aliens is the rare sequel that respects its predecessor while forging an entirely different identity. Where Alien was slow, atmospheric, and terrifying, Aliens is fast, loud, and exhilarating. Both approaches are masterful. Cameron understood that you cannot scare an audience the same way twice, so he did not try.

Sigourney Weaver's Ripley is even better here than in the original. Traumatized by her experience, manipulated by the corporate-military complex, and driven by a maternal instinct awakened by the orphaned girl Newt — Ripley transforms from a survivor into a warrior. The scene where she faces the alien queen in the power loader — 'Get away from her, you bitch!' — is the most cathartic moment in sci-fi action cinema.

Bill Paxton's Hudson ('Game over, man! Game over!') and Jenette Goldstein's Vasquez give the Colonial Marines a lived-in authenticity. Cameron makes you care about these soldiers before he kills them, which is why the deaths hit so hard. The film's influence on military science fiction — from Halo to Starship Troopers to every space marine in video game history — is immeasurable. Aliens proved that genre sequels could be as intelligent and emotionally powerful as prestige drama.
