Iconic Quote
“Life's full of tough choices, isn't it?”
— Ursula, The Little Mermaid
What Makes Them Great
Ursula is Disney's grandest performance villain — a deal-making diva who steals the show and the heroine's voice with equal flair. Carroll's vocal theatrics, the Divine-inspired design, and 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' make her the Renaissance era's most entertaining antagonist.
The Villain
Pat Carroll's Ursula is Disney's most theatrical villain — a sea witch who steals Ariel's voice in exchange for human legs, then sabotages the deal to claim the mermaid's soul. Carroll, a stage veteran, brought Broadway-caliber vocal theatrics to the role. Ursula's design — inspired by drag legend Divine — is voluptuous, tentacled, and fabulous. 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' is the greatest villain deal-making scene in animation, a masterclass in seductive manipulation.
