What Makes Them Great

Ledger's Joker is terrifying because he has no origin, no motivation that can be reasoned with, and no limit to what he will do. He is the embodiment of the idea that some people just want to watch the world burn. The performance is so complete that it erased every previous interpretation of the character and made every subsequent one feel like an imitation.

The Villain

Heath Ledger did not play the Joker. He became the Joker. The transformation was so complete, so disturbing, and so all-consuming that it redefined what audiences expected from comic book villainy. Ledger's Joker is not a criminal mastermind with a plan. He is chaos incarnate — an agent of entropy who wants to prove that civilization is a lie and that everyone, given enough pressure, will abandon their principles. 'I'm an agent of chaos,' he tells Harvey Dent. 'And you know the thing about chaos? It's fair.'

Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for 43 days to develop the character. He kept a diary filled with images, phrases, and ideas. He experimented with the voice — that unsettling, constantly shifting cadence that makes every line feel both improvised and calculated. The lip-licking. The scars. The stories about the scars that change every time he tells them. Every detail was deliberate, and every detail contributed to a performance that transcends its genre.

Ledger died before The Dark Knight was released. He was 28. The posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor was both an acknowledgment of an extraordinary performance and a recognition of what cinema lost. Ledger's Joker is the most influential villain performance of the 21st century — the benchmark against which every subsequent comic book villain has been measured and found wanting.
