Iconic Quote
“I have to return some videotapes.”
— Patrick Bateman, American Psycho
What Makes Them Great
Bateman is the villain as social satire — a serial killer indistinguishable from every other Wall Street sociopath because the system rewards the same traits. Bale's performance is both terrifying and hilarious, and the character's misappropriation by internet culture proves the film's thesis about surface-level worship.
The Villain
Christian Bale's Patrick Bateman is the most satirically precise villain in modern cinema — a Wall Street investment banker whose obsession with business cards, reservations at Dorsia, and the perfect skincare routine is indistinguishable from his obsession with murdering people. Mary Harron's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel understands that Bateman's horror is not the violence itself but the system that created him: a culture so obsessed with surface that a serial killer can operate in plain sight because no one is paying attention to anyone else.
Bale's performance is a razor-edge walk between horror and comedy. The Huey Lewis monologue — where Bateman delivers a passionate music review while preparing to axe-murder a colleague — is simultaneously the funniest and most disturbing scene in the film. Bale plays Bateman's facade with terrifying precision: the too-wide smile, the mechanical small talk, the eyes that are calculating behind every compliment. He is not pretending to be human. He is pretending to care about being human, and there is a difference.
Bateman has become one of cinema's most quoted, most memed, and most misunderstood characters. The 'sigma male' internet culture that unironically idolizes him misses the entire point of the character — which, ironically, proves the character's thesis. Bateman is the warning that a society obsessed with status and surface will produce monsters who are indistinguishable from its heroes.
