Hans Gruber, Die Hard

What Makes Them Great

Hans Gruber is the platonic ideal of the action movie villain: intelligent, charming, ruthless, and always three moves ahead. Alan Rickman's first film performance set the standard that every subsequent action villain has failed to reach. His chemistry with Bruce Willis drives the entire film.

The Villain

Hans Gruber is the greatest action movie villain of all time, and it is not close. Alan Rickman, in his first film role, created a character so suave, so intelligent, and so entertainingly ruthless that he elevated Die Hard from a great action movie to a masterpiece. Gruber is a terrorist who pretends to be a terrorist — his actual motivation is a $640 million robbery — and his ability to improvise, adapt, and maintain composure under pressure makes him a worthy adversary for John McClane.

Rickman plays Gruber with a theatrical elegance that makes every scene he is in a pleasure to watch. The Savile Row suit. The accent that shifts between German precision and affected American casualness. The way he can transition from polished negotiation to cold-blooded murder without changing his expression. Rickman understood that the best villains are the ones who believe they are the hero of their own story, and Gruber absolutely believes he is the smartest person in every room — because he usually is.

The dynamic between Gruber and McClane is the engine of Die Hard. They are complementary opposites: Gruber is European, cultured, and plans everything; McClane is American, working-class, and improvises everything. Their chess match through the floors of Nakatomi Plaza is the template for every hero-villain dynamic in action cinema since. And Gruber's death — the watch, the fall, the look of disbelief — is the most satisfying villain defeat in the genre.
