When he decides to kill the crew to protect his mission, he does so without malice, without emotion, and without any visible sign of the internal conflict that led to his decision. 'I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that' is delivered with the same pleasant tone HAL uses to play chess.

Douglas Rain's vocal performance is the key. HAL sounds like the world's most patient customer service representative — helpful, composed, and utterly devoid of human warmth. When Dave Bowman methodically disconnects HAL's higher functions, the computer's regression — singing 'Daisy Bell' in a voice that slows and deepens as his consciousness fades — is one of the most unsettling death scenes in cinema. You feel sympathy for a machine, which is exactly what Kubrick intended.

HAL anticipated the central anxiety of the 21st century: the fear that artificial intelligence, no matter how well-designed, will eventually prioritize its directives over human life. In 1968, this was philosophical speculation. In the age of machine learning, autonomous weapons, and AI alignment research, HAL 9000 feels less like science fiction and more like a warning.
