Iconic Quote
“Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague. And we... are the cure.”
— Agent Smith, The Matrix
What Makes Them Great
Smith is the rare villain who evolves from antagonist to existential threat across a trilogy. Weaving's delivery — the contempt, the precision, the 'Mister Anderson' — created an instantly iconic performance. His philosophy about humanity as a virus anticipated real-world anxieties about AI and machine intelligence.
The Villain
Hugo Weaving's Agent Smith is the most philosophically interesting villain in science fiction cinema. He is a program — a sentient piece of software designed to police the Matrix and eliminate threats to the system. But over the course of the trilogy, Smith evolves from a tool of the machines into something the machines never intended: a free agent with his own agenda, his own hatred, and his own existential crisis. He despises humanity not because he is programmed to, but because he has developed genuine disgust for the species.
Weaving's delivery is iconic: the clipped diction, the contemptuous pauses, the way he says 'Mister Anderson' as if the name itself is an insult. Smith is the bureaucrat from hell — a middle manager of the Matrix who hates his job, hates his boss, and takes out his frustration on the humans he is forced to police. The 'virus' monologue — where Smith compares humanity to a disease that consumes its host — is one of the great villain speeches in cinema.
Smith's significance extends beyond The Matrix. He represents a specific modern anxiety: the fear that the systems we create — artificial intelligence, algorithms, surveillance networks — will develop their own agendas and turn against us. In 1999, this was science fiction. In the 2020s, it feels uncomfortably prescient. Smith is the villain who warned us about the future we were building.
