Winston Churchill's 'We Shall Fight on the Beaches'

On June 4, 1940, the British Expeditionary Force had just been evacuated from Dunkirk. France was falling. Nazi Germany controlled most of Western Europe. Britain stood essentially alone against the most powerful military machine the world had ever assembled. In that moment of maximum peril, Winston Churchill stood before Parliament and delivered words that would define the spirit of a nation at war.

The speech is a masterclass in managing expectations while inspiring defiance. Churchill does not sugarcoat the situation — he describes the Dunkirk evacuation honestly, acknowledges the losses, and warns that 'wars are not won by evacuations.' But the final passage — building from 'we shall fight on the beaches' through 'we shall fight on the landing grounds, in the fields and in the streets, in the hills' to the climactic 'we shall never surrender' — is the most stirring call to arms in the English language.
