The Program
WildStang is one of the most storied programs in FIRST Robotics history. Based in Rolling Meadows, a suburb northwest of Chicago, Team 111 has been competing since the early days of FRC and has maintained elite-level competitiveness for over two decades. In a competition where many teams rise and fall with the graduation cycles of key students, WildStang's consistency is itself an achievement — a testament to a program culture that transcends any individual.
The team was originally sponsored by Motorola, one of the earliest corporate backers of FIRST Robotics. That partnership brought professional engineering mentorship and resources to Rolling Meadows High School at a time when most high schools had never heard of competitive robotics. The engineering culture that Motorola helped establish has outlasted the sponsorship itself, becoming embedded in the DNA of the program.
WildStang's robots are known for innovative drivetrain and manipulator designs. They have a track record of finding creative solutions to game challenges — mechanisms that other teams had not considered but that prove devastatingly effective in competition. This innovative spirit reflects a program that encourages students to think beyond conventional approaches and take calculated risks.
The team's commitment to gracious professionalism — FIRST's founding principle of fierce competition tempered by mutual respect — has made them role models for how a robotics program should operate. WildStang competes hard, but they also share knowledge, help teams in their pits, and celebrate the achievements of others. Their legacy in the Chicago-area FRC community is one of both excellence and generosity.
