Why It Ranks
My Cousin Vinny is used in law schools to teach courtroom procedure — it is that accurate. Marisa Tomei's Oscar is one of the most deserved in comedy history. Joe Pesci's fish-out-of-water Brooklynite is the perfect comedy engine. The tire-mark testimony is the best courtroom scene in any comedy.
The Film
My Cousin Vinny is the greatest legal comedy ever made — a film so accurate in its courtroom procedures that law professors screen it for students. Joe Pesci's Vinny Gambini, a Brooklyn lawyer who has never won a case, defends his cousin against a murder charge in rural Alabama. Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as Mona Lisa Vito, a mechanic who demolishes the prosecution's case with her expertise on tire marks. The Oscar was controversial then. It is obviously deserved now.
Fun Facts
Law professors at Harvard, Georgetown, and UCLA use the film to teach evidence law — it is considered the most legally accurate comedy ever made.
Marisa Tomei's Oscar win was so unexpected that a false rumor circulated for years that presenter Jack Palance read the wrong name.
Joe Pesci improvised Vinny's courtroom outbursts — the judge's exasperated reactions are partly genuine.
The film's depiction of voir dire (jury selection) is so precise that actual attorneys have cited it in legal briefs.
