Why It Ranks

The project that turned prompt engineering into a reusable, shareable discipline. Fabric's Pattern library captures expertise that would otherwise be locked in individual developers' heads and makes it available to everyone.

The Project

Fabric is an open-source framework for augmenting humans using AI, built around the concept of 'Patterns' — reusable prompts that solve specific problems. Instead of learning how to write effective prompts for every task, Fabric provides a library of battle-tested Patterns for common tasks like summarizing articles, extracting insights, analyzing security threats, creating presentations, and dozens more.

Fabric's design philosophy is that AI's value comes not from the model itself but from how you use it. The same model with a mediocre prompt produces mediocre results; the same model with an expertly crafted Pattern produces exceptional results. Fabric's Pattern library captures the prompt engineering expertise of its community, making that expertise available to every user.

The framework works with Claude, GPT-4, and local models through a clean command-line interface that follows Unix conventions. Patterns can be chained together using pipes, enabling complex workflows that combine multiple AI capabilities. Fabric has become particularly popular among security professionals, researchers, and content creators who use its specialized Patterns daily.

Built with AI

Fabric represents the new paradigm of software development — where human creativity and AI capability combine to build things that neither could create alone. This is what the future of building looks like.
