Why It Ranks

The protocol that could become the USB-C of AI tool integration. MCP standardizes how AI models connect to external tools and data, solving the fragmentation problem that makes AI applications hard to build and maintain.

The Project

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is Anthropic's open standard for connecting AI models to external data sources, tools, and services. MCP defines a universal interface that allows Claude (and potentially other models) to interact with databases, APIs, file systems, and any other data source through a standardized protocol.

MCP is important because it solves the integration problem that has plagued AI applications. Before MCP, every tool integration required custom code — connecting Claude to a database required different code than connecting it to a CRM or a file system. MCP standardizes these connections, allowing developers to build integrations once and use them across any MCP-compatible application.

The protocol's architecture is inspired by the Language Server Protocol (LSP) that powers IDE intelligence features. Just as LSP created a universal interface between code editors and language servers, MCP creates a universal interface between AI models and the tools they need to be useful. This standardization is essential infrastructure for the AI application ecosystem.

Built with AI

Model Context Protocol (MCP) represents the new paradigm of software development — where human creativity and AI capability combine to build things that neither could create alone. This is what the future of building looks like.
