Why They Rank

One of two players to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season, a championship and Finals MVP. Unseld's outlet passing, toughness, and rebounding made him one of the most impactful non-scorers in history.

The Career

Wes Unseld is one of only two players in NBA history — along with Wilt Chamberlain — to win both Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season (1969). At 6'7" and 245 pounds, he was undersized for a center but compensated with a physicality, toughness, and outlet passing ability that transformed the Bullets from a mediocre team into instant contenders.

Unseld's outlet passes were legendary. He would grab a defensive rebound and fire a baseball pass the length of the court with pinpoint accuracy, igniting the Bullets' fast break before the opposing defense could set. This skill alone changed the tempo of every game he played and made his teammates significantly better. His 1978 championship — winning Finals MVP at age 32 — capped a career defined by doing the unglamorous work that wins basketball games.

Unseld averaged only 10.8 points per game for his career, but his impact transcended scoring. His rebounding (14.0 per game in his best seasons), his screen-setting, his physical toughness, and his leadership made him one of the most impactful players of the 1970s. He played his entire 13-year career with one franchise, an embodiment of loyalty and professionalism.
