Why They Rank

The original triple-double machine and the prototype for every modern point guard. Robertson's 1961-62 season was so far ahead of its time that it took 55 years for anyone to match it. His fight for free agency changed the NBA's economic structure forever.

The Career

Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double for an entire season in 1961-62 — 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game. When Russell Westbrook replicated the feat 55 years later, it was treated as one of the most remarkable statistical achievements in modern basketball. For Robertson, it was just what he did as a 23-year-old in his second professional season. The Big O was doing things in the 1960s that would not be seen again for half a century.

Robertson was the prototype for the modern point guard — a 6'5" playmaker who could score from anywhere, pass with elite precision, and rebound like a forward. He averaged 25.7 points, 9.5 assists, and 7.5 rebounds for his career, numbers that would make him an MVP candidate in any era. His partnership with a young Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Milwaukee produced a championship in 1971 and showcased Robertson's ability to elevate elite teammates.

Beyond statistics, Robertson was a civil rights pioneer who fought against the NBA's restrictive labor practices. The 'Oscar Robertson Rule' — which established free agency in professional basketball — bears his name and transformed the economic landscape of the sport. Every NBA player who has signed a max contract or changed teams in free agency owes a debt to Oscar Robertson's willingness to challenge the system.
