Why They Rank

The only player to lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season — a feat that has stood for over 50 years. Archibald's championship and six All-Star selections validate his unique place in history.

The Career

Nate 'Tiny' Archibald accomplished something in 1972-73 that no player in NBA history has done before or since: he led the league in both scoring (34.0 PPG) and assists (11.4 APG) in the same season. This feat — being both the best scorer and the best passer in professional basketball simultaneously — is so singular that it has stood alone for over 50 years. Nobody has come close to replicating it.

At 6'1" and 150 pounds, Archibald was one of the smallest stars in NBA history, but his speed, quickness, and ability to penetrate defenses made him virtually impossible to contain. He grew up in the South Bronx housing projects and developed his game on New York City playgrounds, bringing a streetball creativity and fearlessness to the professional level that made him one of the most exciting players of the 1970s.

Archibald won a championship with the 1981 Boston Celtics, providing veteran leadership and playmaking for a team led by Larry Bird. His career was nearly derailed by an Achilles injury that cost him the entire 1977-78 season, but he rebuilt his game and adapted from score-first point guard to pass-first floor general, showing a versatility that extended his career and expanded his legacy.
