Why They Rank

The top scorer of the 1980s, over 25,000 career points, and eight consecutive seasons above 25 PPG. English's quiet consistency and prolific scoring volume made him one of the most productive players in NBA history.

The Career

Alex English was the most prolific scorer of the 1980s — a decade that included Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. He scored more points in the 1980s than any other player, averaging over 25 points per game for eight consecutive seasons with the Denver Nuggets. His finger-roll, mid-range game, and ability to score in transition made him one of the most efficient and consistent scorers in league history.

English was the centerpiece of the Doug Moe Nuggets, who played the fastest-paced offense in the NBA and regularly posted scores in the 120s and 130s. While critics dismissed Denver's offense as 'system inflated,' English's scoring was genuine — he created his own shot, scored in isolation, and was the go-to option in crunch time for a team that reached the Western Conference Finals in 1985.

English's 25,613 career points place him 19th on the all-time scoring list, ahead of Hakeem Olajuwon, Elgin Baylor, and Charles Barkley. His eight All-Star selections and nine consecutive seasons of 23+ points per game reflect a consistency that is underappreciated in NBA history. English was never the best player in the league, but he was always among the top ten — for an entire decade.
