Why It Ranks
Universal Soldier is the ultimate Van Damme vs. Lundgren vehicle — two action icons at their physical peaks, beating each other to pieces with government-enhanced super-soldier strength. The concept is irresistible, the fights deliver, and the $102 million box office proved the star-vs-star formula worked.
The Film
Universal Soldier pits Van Damme against Dolph Lundgren as reanimated Vietnam War soldiers turned into government super-weapons, and the novelty of seeing two legitimate action stars go at each other carried the film to $102 million worldwide. The premise is B-movie gold: both men were killed in Vietnam, cryogenically frozen, and rebuilt as programmable killing machines. Van Damme’s Luc Deveraux begins recovering his memories and goes rogue; Lundgren’s Andrew Scott recovers his psychopathy instead. Emmerich’s direction is workmanlike, but the Van Damme vs. Lundgren fights deliver, and the grocery store scene where a confused Deveraux tries to be human is unexpectedly touching.
Fun Facts
Van Damme and Lundgren reportedly got into a real fight during filming, though both have given different accounts of the incident.
Roland Emmerich used Universal Soldier’s commercial success to greenlight Independence Day.
The direct-to-video sequels are largely terrible, but Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012) is a genuinely brilliant art-horror action film.
Dolph Lundgren improvised the ear necklace detail for his character, inspired by real accounts from the Vietnam War.
