Why It Ranks

T2 is the greatest action sequel ever made and arguably the most influential action film of the 1990s. Cameron’s blend of revolutionary visual effects, relentless action, and genuine emotion created a template for blockbuster filmmaking that persists to this day. The thumbs-up scene alone secures its legacy.

The Film

James Cameron took everything that worked about The Terminator and amplified it by an order of magnitude. Terminator 2 is not just an action sequel — it is the rare follow-up that transcends its predecessor in every measurable dimension. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the T-800, but this time he is the protector, sent back to defend young John Connor from the T-1000, a liquid-metal assassin played with terrifying calm by Robert Patrick. The role reversal is brilliant: the monster from the first film becomes the guardian.

The action sequences in T2 are legendary. The LA River chase, the Cyberdyne assault, the steel mill climax — each set piece raises the stakes and the spectacle while never losing sight of the emotional core. Linda Hamilton’s transformation into a hardened warrior is one of the greatest character arcs in action cinema. She is not a damsel. She is a soldier, and her ferocity drives the film as much as any explosion.

The visual effects were revolutionary. The T-1000’s liquid-metal morphing was the first convincing use of CGI in an action film, and it changed Hollywood forever. But Cameron never lets the effects overshadow the story. The final scene — the thumbs-up as the T-800 descends into molten steel — remains one of the most emotionally devastating moments in any action film. T2 proved that action movies could make you cry.
