Why It Ranks

Gladiator revived the historical action epic and won Best Picture doing it. Russell Crowe’s Maximus is one of the great action heroes, Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus is a villain for the ages, and the Colosseum sequences remain the benchmark for arena combat. ‘Are you not entertained?’ is the definitive action movie line of the 2000s.

The Film

Ridley Scott resurrected the sword-and-sandal epic with a film that felt both ancient and modern. Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius is the archetypal fallen hero: a general betrayed by the emperor he served, forced into slavery, and fighting his way through the gladiatorial arenas of Rome to avenge his murdered family. Crowe brought a quiet ferocity to the role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.

The battle sequences are staggering. The opening Germanic campaign is chaotic, brutal, and tactically precise. The Colosseum fights escalate from one-on-one combat to chariot battles with tigers. Scott’s eye for scale — thousands of extras, practical sets, real dust and blood — gives every scene the weight of history.

Gladiator won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It single-handedly revived the historical epic genre and inspired a wave of imitators (Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, Alexander) that proved how difficult it is to replicate Scott’s combination of spectacle and emotional depth.

Fun Facts

Russell Crowe initially did not want to do the film and argued with Ridley Scott about the dialogue throughout production.

The Colosseum was a full-scale set built in Malta, with the upper tiers extended digitally.

Oliver Reed died during filming. His remaining scenes were completed using digital face replacement and a body double.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus was based partly on historical accounts and partly on modern narcissistic personality research.
