The Stolen Breath
Palpatine Killed Padmé

She didn't die of a broken heart. The medical droids said she was “completely healthy.” Palpatine used Plagueis's technique to drain her life force across the galaxy and funnel it into the ruined body on the Mustafar operating table. The parallel editing in Revenge of the Sith isn't artistic. It's literal.

The Evidence

Why We Believe

The clues George Lucas embedded in Revenge of the Sith that point to murder, not heartbreak.

The Parallel Editing

In Revenge of the Sith, the scenes of Padmé dying on Polis Massa and Anakin being rebuilt on Mustafar are intercut with precise timing. As Padmé grows weaker, Anakin's suit powers up. As her monitors flatline, his first mechanical breath activates. George Lucas is telling us these events are causally linked.

"Medically, She Is Completely Healthy"

The medical droid's exact words: 'Medically, she is completely healthy. For reasons we can't explain, we are losing her.' Droids don't miss diagnoses. If her body was healthy, then the cause of death was the Force — something no medical scanner can detect.

The Plagueis Speech Was a Confession

Palpatine tells Anakin that Darth Plagueis could 'use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life' and 'keep the ones he cared about from dying.' He then adds: 'He taught his apprentice everything he knew.' Palpatine IS the apprentice. He already has the technique.

Palpatine Knew She Was Dead

When Vader asks about Padmé, Palpatine says: 'It seems, in your anger, you killed her.' He wasn't at Polis Massa. He had no spy there. No report was sent. He knew because HE was the one draining her. He felt her die because he was holding the other end of the connection.

Vader's Impossible Survival

Anakin had third-degree burns over 90% of his body, lost three limbs, and inhaled volcanic gas on Mustafar. No amount of surgery should have kept him alive. But Palpatine promised Anakin the power to cheat death — and he delivered, using Padmé as the fuel source.

The Rule of Two — Energy

The Force maintains a balance. If Palpatine transferred life energy from one person to another, it mirrors the Sith Rule of Two: for one to rise, another must fall. Padmé's death was the price of Vader's rebirth. The Force didn't just allow it — the dark side required it.

ACT I — THE SEEDS OF MANIPULATION

SCENE 1 — THE OPERA HOUSE

INT. GALAXIES OPERA HOUSE, CORUSCANT — NIGHT

The MON CALAMARI BALLET performs far below. Bioluminescent creatures spiral through dark water. The audience is mesmerized. But CHANCELLOR PALPATINE is not watching the show. He is watching ANAKIN SKYWALKER. Anakin sits rigid in the private box, jaw clenched. He hasn't slept in days. The dark circles under his eyes are deep enough to cast shadows. His hand grips the armrest so tightly the metal has begun to bend. PALPATINE (gently, almost fatherly) You look tired, my boy. ANAKIN (staring ahead) I'm fine, Chancellor. PALPATINE No. You're not. A pause. The ballet continues below — a beautiful creature consumed by a larger predator. Palpatine watches this with a thin smile. PALPATINE I can feel your fear, Anakin. You don't need to hide it. Not from me. ANAKIN (turning sharply) How can you feel— PALPATINE (waving a hand) A figure of speech. I've known you since you were a boy. You're afraid of losing someone. A dream, perhaps? Anakin's breath catches. How does he know about the dreams? PALPATINE (continuing, as if reciting a bedtime story) Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? ANAKIN No. PALPATINE I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. Palpatine leans forward. The light from the ballet below catches his face — half-illuminated, half in shadow. And now, for the first time, we see what Anakin cannot: Palpatine's eyes flicker YELLOW for a fraction of a second. Sith gold. PALPATINE Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. ANAKIN (leaning in despite himself) He could actually save people from dying? PALPATINE The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be... unnatural. The word hangs in the air. Below them, the beautiful creature in the ballet is now fully consumed. Gone. Its light absorbed by the predator, which glows brighter. Palpatine watches this and smiles. PALPATINE He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power. Which, eventually, of course, he did. His apprentice learned everything he knew, then killed him in his sleep. The camera holds on Palpatine's face. He is not telling a story. He is making a confession. PALPATINE Ironic. He could save others from death... but not himself. ANAKIN Is it possible to learn this power? PALPATINE (the faintest whisper of a smile) Not from a Jedi. And now we PUSH IN on Palpatine's face as Anakin looks away. His expression shifts. The kindly mentor disappears. What replaces it is something cold, surgical, HUNGRY. He has planted the seed. The harvest will come soon.

SCENE 2 — THE NIGHTMARE

INT. ANAKIN & PADMÉ'S APARTMENT, CORUSCANT — NIGHT

PADMÉ AMIDALA sleeps peacefully, one hand resting on her pregnant belly. Moonlight falls across her face. She is beautiful and alive and everything Anakin is terrified of losing. Anakin lies beside her, eyes wide open. He hasn't slept. He WON'T sleep. But exhaustion takes him anyway. THE DREAM: Padmé on a medical table. Screaming. White lights. Droids moving frantically. And then — silence. Her hand goes limp. The monitors flatline. A baby cries. Then another. But this time the dream shows something NEW. Something it has never shown before. A SHADOW stands in the corner of the medical room. A figure in dark robes. The shadow's hands are raised, and between those hands and Padmé's chest, a THREAD OF LIGHT connects them — golden, pulsing, alive. The shadow is PULLING the light out of her. Padmé gasps. The light dims. The shadow grows stronger. Anakin tries to scream but no sound comes out. He tries to reach for his lightsaber but he has no arms. He is trapped, encased in something — metal, machinery, a prison of black armor — He wakes up SCREAMING. Padmé bolts upright. PADMÉ Anakin! Anakin, it's alright — ANAKIN (gasping, drenched in sweat) I saw it again. I saw you die. PADMÉ (taking his face in her hands) It was a dream. Just a dream. ANAKIN It wasn't. It was real. It was the Force. PADMÉ (firmly) I'm not going to die, Anakin. I'm strong. Our baby is strong. ANAKIN (whispering) There was someone else there. In the room. Someone was... taking something from you. She holds him. He shakes in her arms. And three thousand miles away, in a tower overlooking the Coruscant skyline, Palpatine opens his eyes and smiles. Because the dream wasn't a prophecy. It was a BROADCAST. And he sent it.

SCENE 3 — THE CHANCELLOR'S MEDITATION

INT. PALPATINE'S PRIVATE CHAMBER, SENATE BUILDING — SAME NIGHT

A room that officially doesn't exist. No windows. No records. A chamber hidden behind a false wall in the Chancellor's office, accessible only through the Force. PALPATINE sits cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by SITH HOLOCRONS. They glow red, pulsing in rhythm with his breathing. Ancient Sith texts hover in the air around him — holographic pages written in a language dead for ten thousand years. He has been practicing. His hands are raised, and between them, a SPHERE OF DARK ENERGY rotates slowly. It looks like a miniature star going supernova in reverse — light collapsing inward, consumed by darkness. MAS AMEDDA enters through the hidden door. He stops, seeing the ritual. MAS AMEDDA (nervously) My lord... the Jedi Council has requested— PALPATINE (without opening his eyes) Not now. MAS AMEDDA But— PALPATINE I am perfecting a technique that has not been used in a thousand years. A technique my master believed was his greatest achievement. He was wrong. It was merely a prototype. He opens his eyes. They are PURE YELLOW, burning like twin suns. PALPATINE Plagueis could transfer life between two beings, but the process was crude. Imprecise. The donor had to be willing, or at least unconscious. I've refined it. I can drain the life force from any living being, across any distance, without their knowledge. He stands. The holocrons settle to the floor. PALPATINE All I need is an emotional connection between the source and the target. A bond so deep that the Force itself recognizes it. Love, Amedda. Love is the conduit. MAS AMEDDA The Skywalker boy... and the Senator? PALPATINE (smiling) Their love is the most powerful Force bond I've ever encountered. Strong enough to carry visions across light-years. Strong enough to carry life itself. He walks to the window — the hidden chamber's one concession to the outside world — and looks out at the Coruscant skyline. PALPATINE When the time comes, I will reach through that bond and take what I need. She will weaken. He will be sustained. And the boy will believe it was his own anger that killed her. The guilt will shatter what remains of Anakin Skywalker, and from that wreckage, Darth Vader will rise. MAS AMEDDA (bowing) And if the Jedi sense what you're doing? PALPATINE (turning, amused) The Jedi can barely sense me sitting in the same building. They certainly won't sense a Force technique they don't even believe exists. He laughs. The holocrons flicker. And somewhere across the city, Padmé Amidala shivers in her sleep for no reason at all.

ACT II — THE STOLEN BREATH

SCENE 4 — THE FALL OF ANAKIN

INT. PALPATINE'S OFFICE — NIGHT

The moment everything changes. MACE WINDU lies dead. ANAKIN SKYWALKER stands over the shattered window, hand still extended, lightsaber on the floor. He just helped murder a Jedi Master. His hand is shaking. ANAKIN What... what have I done? PALPATINE (rising from the floor, face scarred by reflected lightning) You are fulfilling your destiny, Anakin. Palpatine's face is ruined now — the Sith visage fully revealed. But his voice is stronger than ever. More certain. He has won, and he knows it. ANAKIN (falling to his knees) I can't... I shouldn't have... PALPATINE (kneeling beside him, almost tender) Become my apprentice. Learn to use the dark side of the Force. It is the only way to save your wife. The word "wife" hits Anakin like a physical blow. Palpatine said it casually, as if he's always known. Because he has. ANAKIN (looking up, desperate) You know how to save Padmé? PALPATINE I told you. Plagueis's apprentice learned everything his master knew. Every technique. Every secret. Including the transfer of life itself. He places a hand on Anakin's shoulder. And through that touch, he pushes — just a WHISPER of dark-side energy, just enough to cloud Anakin's judgment, to make the impossible seem reasonable. PALPATINE To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret. ANAKIN (broken) I'll do whatever you ask. PALPATINE Good. Then henceforth, you shall be known as Darth... Vader. Anakin bows his head. The camera PULLS BACK to reveal Palpatine's face above him — and the expression is not triumph. It is not joy. It is the clinical satisfaction of a surgeon who has just completed the most important incision. He doesn't need to discover anything. He already knows the technique. He's known it for decades. But Anakin must not know that. Anakin must believe they are searching together. Because Anakin must never know the truth: Palpatine is not going to save Padmé. He is going to HARVEST her.

SCENE 5 — MUSTAFAR AND POLIS MASSA

INTERCUT: MUSTAFAR LAVA FIELDS / POLIS MASSA MEDICAL CENTER

The screen SPLITS. LEFT SIDE: The black volcanic shores of Mustafar. ANAKIN — now VADER — lies on the obsidian bank, a burned ruin. Three limbs severed. Skin charred. Lungs filled with superheated gas. By every medical standard in the galaxy, he should be dead in minutes. RIGHT SIDE: POLIS MASSA. A sterile white medical facility on an asteroid. PADMÉ lies on a table, unconscious, being rushed into emergency surgery. OBI-WAN KENOBI follows, ashen-faced, still wearing the scorch marks from their duel. MEDICAL DROID (GH-7) Senator Amidala is in critical condition. We need to operate immediately to save the babies. OBI-WAN Babies? GH-7 She is carrying twins. Obi-Wan's face crumbles. He knew none of this. He looks at Padmé — small, fragile, pregnant with the children of the monster he just left burning on a volcano. --- Meanwhile, on Mustafar, a SHUTTLE descends. PALPATINE steps out, flanked by clone troopers and medical droids. He walks to the edge of the lava bank and looks down at the ruined thing that was Anakin Skywalker. A clone trooper recoils in horror. The medical droids calculate survival probability: 0.003%. But Palpatine is calm. He kneels beside Anakin's body and places one hand on his charred chest. PALPATINE (whispering) Not yet, Lord Vader. Not yet. He closes his eyes. And we see it — the thing the dream warned Anakin about. THE FORCE CONNECTION IGNITES. A THREAD OF GOLDEN LIGHT stretches from Palpatine's hand, through the Force, across the stars, through hyperspace, all the way to Polis Massa, where it wraps around PADMÉ like invisible chains. She is connected to Anakin through love. Through the Force. Through the bond they share. And Palpatine is USING that bond as a conduit. He begins to PULL.

SCENE 6 — THE DRAINING

INTERCUT: MUSTAFAR MEDICAL SHUTTLE / POLIS MASSA MEDICAL CENTER — CONTINUOUS

POLIS MASSA. Padmé lies on the operating table. The GH-7 medical droid begins the procedure to deliver the twins. Everything is stable. Vitals are strong. The babies are healthy. Then — a flicker on the monitor. Padmé's heart rate drops. Two beats. Three. GH-7 Unusual. Initiating cardiac stabilization. The droid administers a stimulant. The heart rate recovers. Obi-Wan watches from behind the glass, arms crossed, worry etched into every line of his face. BAIL ORGANA stands beside him. BAIL She'll be alright. She's strong. OBI-WAN (quietly) Something's wrong. I can feel it. --- MUSTAFAR. Anakin is loaded onto a medical table inside the shuttle. Burns cover every inch of his body. His remaining hand — the mechanical one — clenches and unclenches reflexively. The medical droids are panicking. Nothing they do is working. His midi-chlorian count is dropping. He is dying. Palpatine stands at the foot of the table. His eyes are closed. His hands are raised. Between his palms, a SPHERE OF LIGHT pulses — warm, golden, alive. It is the light he is pulling from Padmé. He pushes the sphere toward Anakin's chest. The effect is immediate. Anakin's vital signs STABILIZE. The midi-chlorian count reverses. Tissue begins to regenerate — not fully, not enough to restore what was lost, but enough to keep him alive. PALPATINE (murmuring, eyes still closed) Hold on, Lord Vader. I'm giving you everything you need. --- POLIS MASSA. Padmé delivers the first baby. A boy. PADMÉ (weakly) Luke... She smiles. But her vitals are dropping again. Faster this time. The GH-7 droid runs a full-spectrum diagnostic. GH-7 I cannot explain it. She is losing vital energy, but there is no physiological cause. All organs are functioning normally. All systems are intact. OBI-WAN (through the intercom) Then what's happening to her? GH-7 She appears to be... losing the will to live. The words echo in the sterile room. But we know the truth. This has nothing to do with will. This is THEFT. --- MUSTAFAR. Palpatine pulls HARDER. The sphere of light between his hands grows brighter. He is taking more now — greedily, desperately — because Anakin's injuries are catastrophic and the body demands more life force to sustain itself. The medical droids begin constructing the suit. The black armor. The helmet. The respirator. They are building Vader's prison around his still-dying body, and Palpatine is pouring stolen life into it like fuel into an engine. PALPATINE (through gritted teeth, sweat on his scarred brow) The suit will sustain the body. But the FORCE must sustain the soul. And for that, my dear apprentice, someone else must pay the price. His hands tremble. The thread of golden light stretching across the galaxy grows taut, vibrating like a plucked wire. --- POLIS MASSA. The second baby arrives. A girl. PADMÉ (barely a whisper) Leia... Her skin is gray now. Her eyes are losing focus. The monitors show what the droids cannot explain: her life energy is leaving her body as if drawn out by an invisible syringe. OBI-WAN (rushing to her side) Padmé, stay with me. You have to stay. PADMÉ (reaching for his hand) Obi-Wan... there's... good in him. I know... I know there's... Her hand tightens on his. Her eyes lock onto his face with a sudden clarity. PADMÉ Something is... pulling... I can feel... She can FEEL it. She knows something is happening. Not consciously — she doesn't understand what it is — but some part of her, the part connected to the Force through her bond with Anakin, can feel herself being drained. Her monitors flatline. GH-7 She's gone. The droids pull sheets over her body. Obi-Wan stands, holding the two newborns, tears streaming down his face. --- MUSTAFAR. At the EXACT same moment, the helmet descends onto Vader's face. The seal locks. The respirator activates. KSSHH... HAAAH... KSSHH... HAAAH... The first breath of Darth Vader is the last breath of Padmé Amidala. Palpatine lowers his hands. The sphere of light is gone. He used every last drop. He staggers slightly — the effort was enormous — but he recovers quickly. He straightens his robes. Composes his face. The operating table tilts upright. Vader stands for the first time, encased in black armor, more machine than man. Palpatine watches his creation with cold satisfaction. PALPATINE Lord Vader... can you hear me? VADER (the voice modulator distorting his words into something inhuman) Yes, master. Where is Padmé? Is she safe? Is she alright? And here it is. The cruelest moment in the entire saga. Palpatine KNOWS what happened to Padmé. He killed her. He drained every ounce of life from her body and fed it to the machine standing before him. He knows she is dead because he FELT her die — felt the last flicker of warmth leave her body and enter Anakin's. And he lies. PALPATINE (with rehearsed regret) It seems, in your anger... you killed her. The operating theater is silent except for the respirator. VADER I... I couldn't have. She was alive. I felt her. She was ALIVE. PALPATINE (shaking his head slowly) The dark side has consequences, Lord Vader. Your anger on Mustafar— VADER NOOOOOOO! Vader's scream tears through the Force. Equipment shatters. Droids are crushed. The walls buckle. The entire facility shakes. And Palpatine steps back, watching, and his face shows no emotion at all. Because this was always the plan. The grief. The rage. The guilt. Vader will carry these forever. They will make him obedient. Controllable. A weapon fueled by an anguish that will never heal — because he will never know the truth. He didn't kill Padmé. His master did.

ACT III — THE GHOST AND THE MACHINE

SCENE 7 — VADER'S MEDITATION CHAMBER

INT. EXECUTOR, VADER'S MEDITATION CHAMBER — YEARS LATER

Twenty years have passed. DARTH VADER sits in his hyperbaric meditation chamber aboard the Super Star Destroyer Executor. The chamber is sealed. The helmet is off. We see his scarred, pale face — more corpse than man. He meditates, reaching into the Force, searching for something he has searched for every single day since Mustafar. Her. He reaches through the Force, across the galaxy, looking for any echo of Padmé. Some whisper. Some trace. The Force holds the memory of everything that ever lived — he should be able to find her. But he can't. And it's not because she's gone. It's because something TOOK her. Not death. Not the natural return to the Force. Something ripped her out of the cosmic fabric, consumed her energy so completely that there is nothing left to find. This has bothered him for twenty years. The dead leave echoes. Qui-Gon left an echo. Every Jedi he killed in Order 66 left echoes. But Padmé left NOTHING. As if she was erased. VADER (to himself, without the helmet's modulation — his real voice, ragged and broken) Where are you? He reaches deeper. The meditation chamber hums. The Force swirls around him like a dark ocean. And then — for the first time in two decades — he finds something. Not Padmé. But a TRACE of the technique that killed her. It's like finding a fingerprint at a crime scene. A residual dark-side signature, faint but unmistakable, woven into the very fabric of his own life force. His life force is not entirely his own. Part of it is HERS. Threaded through his cells, his midi-chlorians, his mechanical heart. And it was put there by someone else. Someone who knew the technique. Someone who was in the room. Vader's eyes open. They are not yellow. For just a moment, they are the blue of Anakin Skywalker. VADER (a whisper) He told me I killed her. The chamber hisses. The helmet descends. The mask seals. And when Darth Vader stands, something has shifted inside him. A crack in the foundation. A question that will take years to become an answer. But the seed is planted.

SCENE 8 — THE CONFRONTATION

INT. EMPEROR'S THRONE ROOM, DEATH STAR II — LATER

The Battle of Endor rages outside the viewport. The Rebel fleet is taking heavy losses. The trap is sprung. EMPEROR PALPATINE stands at the panoramic window, watching the destruction with undisguised joy. LUKE SKYWALKER is shackled nearby. DARTH VADER stands at the Emperor's side. But Vader is not watching the battle. He is watching Palpatine. He has been watching Palpatine differently ever since that meditation. Every interaction now filtered through the question: did you kill her? PALPATINE (to Luke) Your fleet is lost. And your friends on the Endor moon will not survive. There is no hope. LUKE There is always hope. PALPATINE (laughing) Your father thought the same once. And I took everything from him. Vader's helmet turns. Slowly. The words land differently now. VADER (carefully) Everything, my master? Palpatine glances at Vader. Something flickers across his face — not concern, exactly, but awareness. He measures the question. Dismisses it. PALPATINE His attachments made him weak. As yours make you weak, young Skywalker. LUKE (to Vader) I feel the good in you. The conflict. VADER There is no conflict. But there IS conflict. And it's not about Luke. Not yet. It's about Padmé. It's about a lie told twenty years ago on an operating table. A lie so complete, so devastating, that it became the foundation of everything Vader is. And that foundation is cracking. PALPATINE (losing patience, turning to Luke) If you will not be turned, you will be destroyed. Lightning erupts from Palpatine's fingers. Luke screams. The Force lightning tears through his body, arcing and crackling. LUKE (in agony) Father, please! Vader watches. The lightning reflects in his mask's lenses. And in that reflection, he doesn't see Luke. He sees PADMÉ. The same lightning. The same technique. The same energy manipulation. Palpatine isn't just hurting Luke — he's DRAINING him. The same way he drained Padmé. The same hands. The same hunger. And now Vader KNOWS. Not suspects. Not questions. KNOWS. The voice that comes out of the mask is not Vader's. It is Anakin's. VADER/ANAKIN You killed her. Palpatine turns. The lightning stops for a fraction of a second. PALPATINE What? VADER/ANAKIN Padmé. You told me I killed her. But I didn't. YOU did. You used Plagueis's technique. You drained her life force to keep me alive. You STOLE her from me and then told me it was my fault. The throne room goes SILENT. Even the sounds of battle outside seem to dim. Palpatine stares at Vader. And for the first time in the Emperor's long, manipulative life, he has no prepared response. No carefully crafted lie. No contingency. PALPATINE (recovering, cold) Everything I did, I did to preserve you. You were too valuable to lose. VADER/ANAKIN She was my wife. PALPATINE She was a RESOURCE. And I used her as one. As I have used everything. As I will use your son. He raises his hands. The lightning hits Luke again, HARDER. The boy screams. And Vader moves. He grabs Palpatine — lifts him — and carries him to the shaft. Palpatine's lightning courses through Vader's suit, frying circuits, destroying systems, but Vader doesn't stop. Because this is not the sacrifice of a redeemed father. This is REVENGE. Twenty years of lies. Twenty years of guilt. Twenty years of believing he killed the woman he loved. And it was Palpatine. ALL of it was Palpatine. VADER/ANAKIN (as he hurls Palpatine into the shaft) This is for Padmé. Palpatine screams as he falls. The dark-side energy explodes upward from the shaft, and with it, something else — a golden mist, barely visible, that rises and dissolves into the air. It is the last remnant of Padmé's stolen life force, finally released. Vader collapses. His suit is destroyed. His life support is failing. Luke drags him to the shuttle bay. They sit together as the Death Star shakes itself apart. LUKE (removing the helmet) Father... Anakin's face is gray, scarred, dying. But his eyes are clear. Blue. And at peace. ANAKIN Luke... your mother... she didn't die because of me. I need you to know that. She didn't die because I failed. LUKE (tears streaming) I know, Father. ANAKIN Tell your sister... tell Leia... that the last thing her mother did was give us her name. She named you both. Even at the end... she was strong. He smiles. It's the first real smile Anakin Skywalker has smiled in twenty years. ANAKIN I can see her, Luke. She's here. She's... His eyes focus on something beyond the shuttle walls, beyond the exploding station, beyond the physical world entirely. His face softens. ANAKIN Oh, Padmé... He dies. And in the Force, on the other side, PADMÉ AMIDALA is waiting. She extends her hand. Anakin takes it. And they walk into the light together — the light that was stolen from her, finally returned.

SCENE 9 — EPILOGUE: THE FORCE GHOST

EXT. ENDOR FOREST — NIGHT

The celebration rages. Ewoks drum. Rebels cheer. Fireworks paint the sky. The Empire has fallen. LUKE stands at the edge of the celebration, watching three FORCE GHOSTS shimmer in the blue light between the trees: OBI-WAN KENOBI, YODA, and ANAKIN SKYWALKER — young Anakin, as he was before the fall. But tonight, there is a fourth ghost. PADMÉ AMIDALA stands beside Anakin, her hand in his. She is radiant — dressed in the white gown from the meadow on Naboo, hair falling free, eyes bright with the light that was stolen from her and has now been returned. Luke sees her. He doesn't know who she is — not yet. But the Force whispers to him, and somewhere deep in his heart, the orphan boy from Tatooine understands. LUKE (whispering) Mom... Padmé smiles at him. She raises a hand in greeting — a gesture that says everything words cannot. I see you. I'm proud of you. I love you. Then she turns to Anakin. He looks at her with the wonder of a boy who once said, "Are you an angel?" ANAKIN (Force ghost, to Padmé) I'm sorry. For everything. PADMÉ (placing her hand on his cheek) I know. The ghosts fade. The celebration continues. Luke wipes his eyes and turns back to his friends, carrying with him the knowledge that his mother was not weak. She did not "lose the will to live." She was the victim of the greatest theft in galactic history — and her stolen light is what kept his father alive long enough to save them all. The breath that was taken from her became the breath that redeemed a galaxy. SMASH CUT TO BLACK. TITLE CARD: "THE STOLEN BREATH" The Force theme plays — but layered underneath it, a woman's voice hums the Naboo lullaby. Soft. Warm. Alive. CREDITS.

He could save others from death, but not himself. In the end, the real irony is that Palpatine used the same power to kill the one person Vader was trying to save.
