Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Portfolio Battle work?▼
Pick 5 stocks or ETFs from a pool of 28 options. Choose a time period (10, 20, or 30 years). Your portfolio is equally weighted (20% each) and compared against the S&P 500 over the same period. The simulator uses approximate historical compound annual growth rates (CAGR) for each stock.
Are the returns in this simulator accurate?▼
The returns are simplified approximations based on publicly available historical CAGR data. Real investment returns depend on exact entry/exit dates, dividends, splits, and many other factors. This is an educational tool, not a precise backtester. Never make investment decisions based on this simulation.
Why is it so hard to beat the S&P 500?▼
The S&P 500 is a self-cleaning index — it drops failing companies and adds successful ones automatically. According to SPIVA Scorecard data, over 92% of large-cap U.S. fund managers underperform the S&P 500 over a 15-year period. The odds are stacked against stock pickers.
What is the best investment strategy for most people?▼
For most people, the evidence strongly supports buying low-cost index funds (like VOO, VTI, or VTSAX) and holding for decades. Warren Buffett himself recommends this approach for most investors. It's boring, but it works better than active stock picking for 90%+ of people.
