CATAN: The Only Investment That Always Pays Off
“CATAN is the best $47 I've ever spent. But I should have gotten the 5-6 player bundle for $70 because every game night someone asks 'can one more person play?'”

CATAN Board Game + 5-6 Player Extension
42,345 reviews
Pros
- +Same incredible game
- +Now plays up to 6 people
- +Better for game nights and holidays
- +The extension is $22 separately, so the bundle saves money
Cons
- -$23 more upfront
- -More players = longer games = more arguments about wheat
The Story
I bought CATAN because I wanted a family game night that wasn't Candy Land for the 800th time. What I got was an obsession. The game is perfect: simple enough to learn in 15 minutes, complex enough that you're still finding new strategies 100 games later.
It teaches resource trading, negotiation, and strategic blocking — skills that are honestly more useful than half of what I learned getting my MBA. The problem is I bought the base game (3-4 players) when I should have gotten the 5-6 player bundle. Every single game night, someone shows up and we can't fit them in.
This is the rare product where the 'better option' is just MORE of the same thing. CATAN is CATAN. You can't go wrong. But get the extension upfront instead of paying $22 for it separately later like I inevitably will.
Also, whoever keeps putting the robber on my ore hex — you know who you are.
The Lesson
CATAN is the best investment you'll make this year. Just get the 5-6 player version from the start.
