Cost of Owning a Car

The sticker price is just the beginning. Insurance, gas, depreciation, maintenance, and fees mean the true cost of car ownership is 2-3x the monthly payment. Here's the full picture.

What to Do About It

Buy used, 2-3 years old. You avoid the steepest depreciation (20-25% in year one) while getting a nearly-new vehicle. Certified pre-owned programs add peace of mind.

Keep cars longer. The longer you own a car past the loan payoff, the cheaper your annual cost becomes. A reliable car driven 10+ years has a much lower true cost than trading every 3-4 years.

Shop insurance annually. Insurance companies count on inertia. Getting 3-5 quotes each year can save $300-$800 annually.

Consider if you need a car at all. In walkable/transit-friendly cities, car-sharing or ride-hailing can be dramatically cheaper than ownership. Do the math.
