Glen's Certification Perspective
I'll be honest: I've spent more time building production systems than collecting certifications. After 10+ years, 85+ production releases, and building Delivery Hub from zero to AppExchange, I've learned that certs open doors but experience keeps you in the room.
That said, I genuinely believe certifications are valuable — especially early in your career. They force you to study areas you wouldn't naturally explore. I never would have learned Marketing Cloud features if not for studying broadly across the platform. Every cert I studied for taught me something I later used in a client engagement.
My advice: don't chase certs for LinkedIn badges. Pick the certifications that align with the work you actually want to do, study them seriously, and pair each one with a hands-on project. A Platform Developer I cert backed by a real project on GitHub is worth more than five certs you crammed for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the easiest Salesforce certification to get?
The Salesforce Administrator certification is widely considered the easiest starting point, with a 65% passing score requirement and extensive free study materials on Trailhead. Most dedicated students pass within 2-3 months of study. The Platform App Builder is a close second in terms of accessibility.
Q: How much does a Salesforce certification cost?
Most Salesforce certifications cost $200 USD for the exam fee, with a $100 retake fee if you fail. Architect-level designer exams cost $400. The Technical Architect (CTA) review board costs $6,000. Annual maintenance modules are free but mandatory to keep your certs active.
Q: Which Salesforce certification pays the most?
The Technical Architect (CTA) credential commands the highest salaries, with CTAs earning $200,000-$350,000+ annually. After that, Platform Developer II holders earn $140,000-$200,000, followed by CPQ Specialists at $130,000-$180,000. Architect-level certifications consistently correlate with the highest compensation in the Salesforce ecosystem.
Q: How many Salesforce certifications should I get?
Quality matters more than quantity. 3-5 strategically chosen certifications are more valuable than 10+ random ones. Start with Admin, add a developer or consultant cert, then specialize. Most hiring managers care more about relevant experience paired with 2-3 targeted certifications than a wall of credentials.
Q: How long does it take to prepare for a Salesforce certification?
For someone with existing Salesforce experience, most certifications take 4-8 weeks of dedicated study. The Administrator cert typically takes 2-3 months for complete beginners. Advanced certs like Platform Developer II or Architect credentials can take 3-6 months. The CTA can take 1-2 years of preparation.
Q: Are Salesforce certifications worth it in 2026?
Yes, Salesforce certifications remain highly valuable in 2026. The Salesforce ecosystem continues to grow with AI features like Einstein GPT creating new specializations. Certified professionals earn 20-30% more than uncertified peers on average. However, certifications without hands-on experience have diminishing returns — pair them with real project work.
Q: Can you get a Salesforce job without certifications?
Yes, many Salesforce professionals work without formal certifications, including experienced developers like Glen Bradford who demonstrate expertise through production work (85+ releases, AppExchange apps). However, certifications help you get past resume screening, especially early in your career. They signal commitment and baseline knowledge to employers.
Q: What is the best order to get Salesforce certifications?
The recommended path is: 1) Administrator, 2) Platform App Builder, 3) Platform Developer I, 4) Sales Cloud or Service Cloud Consultant, 5) Platform Developer II, 6) A specialty cert like CPQ or Marketing Cloud, 7) Architect credentials. Start broad, then specialize based on your career goals and the market demand in your area.
