Zhang Yiming did not set out to create the most addictive app in the world. He set out to solve an information discovery problem — and the solution fundamentally changed how humanity consumes media. Before ByteDance, content discovery on the internet relied on the social graph. Facebook showed you content from friends. Twitter showed content from people you followed. Zhang Yiming challenged this with a radical alternative: what if an algorithm could learn your preferences directly from your behavior and serve content tailored to your interests regardless of who created it?

This was the core innovation behind Toutiao, launched in 2012, and later Douyin (2016) and TikTok (2017). Zhang Yiming himself has remained enigmatic. Born in 1983 in Fujian Province, he studied software engineering at Nankai University. Colleagues describe him as intensely rational, data-obsessed, and averse to office politics. Whether TikTok's model represents a net positive for society remains debated, but Zhang Yiming created one of the most transformative technology companies of the 21st century.
