Alex Honnold

Alexander Honnold is an American professional rock climber, author, and philanthropist best known for completing the first free solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park on June 3, 2017 — a 3,000-foot vertical granite wall climbed without ropes, harnesses, or any protective equipment. It is widely considered the greatest athletic achievement in human history.

Born on August 17, 1985, in Sacramento, California, Honnold began climbing at age 5 in a local climbing gym. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, for a year before dropping out to climb full-time, living out of a van for nearly a decade to dedicate every waking hour to the craft. His asceticism and singular focus became legendary in the climbing community long before he became a global figure.

Honnold's free solo of El Capitan's Freerider route — 3,000 feet of granite with no margin for error — was documented in the 2018 film "Free Solo," which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The climb required years of preparation, memorizing thousands of individual hand and foot movements, and managing the psychological reality that a single mistake meant certain death. Neuroscientists who scanned Honnold's brain found that his amygdala (the fear center) showed virtually no activation in response to stimuli that terrified normal subjects.

Beyond climbing, Honnold founded the Honnold Foundation in 2012, which promotes solar energy access in underserved communities around the world. The foundation has funded solar projects across more than 20 countries, reflecting Honnold's belief that environmental sustainability and energy equity are among the most important challenges facing humanity. He lives simply, donates a significant portion of his income, and continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in rock climbing.

The van became his home for nearly a decade, a choice that allowed him to train obsessively and travel to climbing destinations without financial pressure.
