About Dietrich Mateschitz
Dietrich Mateschitz was the co-founder and driving force behind Red Bull, the energy drink company that created an entirely new beverage category and became one of the most iconic consumer brands of the modern era. Born in 1944 in Sankt Marein im Muerztal, Austria, Mateschitz was a marketing executive at Blendax (a German toothpaste company) when he discovered a popular energy tonic called Krating Daeng during a business trip to Thailand in 1984. Recognizing its potential for Western markets, he partnered with the Thai creator Chaleo Yoovidhya and adapted the formula to create Red Bull.
Red Bull launched in Austria in 1987, and Mateschitz's marketing genius turned what could have been a niche product into a global phenomenon. Rather than competing with traditional beverage advertising, he pioneered an entirely new approach: associating Red Bull with extreme sports, adventure, and pushing human limits. From Formula 1 racing teams to Felix Baumgartner's stratospheric skydive, Mateschitz created a marketing ecosystem that transcended traditional advertising and built one of the most powerful brands in the world, selling over 12 billion cans annually.
Mateschitz, who passed away in October 2022, left behind a legacy that extends far beyond beverages. He built a sports and media empire that includes two Formula 1 teams, multiple professional soccer clubs, and Red Bull Media House, a world-class content production company. His vision of a brand built on lifestyle, adventure, and human achievement rather than traditional advertising fundamentally changed how consumer products are marketed worldwide. He proved that a single product, marketed with authentic passion and creativity, could create an enduring global empire.

Early Life
Dietrich Mateschitz was born on May 20, 1944, in Sankt Marein im Muerztal, a small town in the Austrian state of Styria. Both of his parents were primary school teachers, and his upbringing was modest and rural. He studied marketing and commerce at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, though it took him ten years to complete his degree — a fact he later joked about, saying he was clearly not a natural academic. After graduating, he worked in marketing roles at Unilever and the German cosmetics company Blendax. It was during a business trip to Thailand in 1982 that he discovered a sweet, caffeinated drink called Krating Daeng (Thai for 'Red Bull') that local truck drivers and laborers drank to stay alert. The discovery would change his life — and create an entirely new global beverage category.
